The Faith Academy of Marble Falls volleyball team defeated San Antonio Lutheran 25-14, 25-10, 25-20 Aug. 31 to end its pre-district schedule.

“We stepped up and pulled it together and got the win,” head coach Erin Sawyer said. “It was very decisive.”

Senior Kaytlyn Wood led the way with nine kills followed by junior Abbye Blackington with eight, and junior Hadley Shipley had seven. Senior Brooke Farmer had seven aces. Shipley also had 11 digs. Freshman Ella Chavira had 14 assists and Shipley had 11. Junior Jillian Martin had 19 digs.

The Lady Flames now turn their attention to the District 3-3A opener against defending state champion Round Rock Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at The Fire Pit on the Faith campus. The Lady Flames have played 26 contests in their pre-district schedule, the most played by a volleyball team in program history.

“We played harder teams to get ready for district,” Sawyer said. “The girls played very well.”

One big benefit of playing that many matches is that coaches were able to mix up the line-ups, move players to different spots and find rotations that put the Lady Flames in the best positions to be successful. Sawyer said the 6-2 set works the best with Shipley and Chavira both playing setter.

“We’re very happy with that,” she said. “(Against Lutheran) Hadley did well and got a lot of digs. We to keep fine-tuning skills. There’s only one way to get better at volleyball — to play volleyball. You do have to play and get as many reps as you can in.”

As for facing the defending state champion, which lost eight players to graduation, Sawyer said she never has to coach effort.

“I know they’ll play hard,” she said. “I’m excited to see them play hard, get their serves in and give Round Rock Christian a hard time. We’re going to try our best to get a win. They’re a strong program “
